Lahiru Thirimanne, a T20 World Cup champion for Sri Lanka, retires from international cricket

<p>Lahiru Thirimanne, a batsman for Sri Lanka, announced his immediate retirement from international cricket after a 12-year stint, bringing an end to his lengthy career.</p>

<p>He participated in three ICC T20 World Cups for Sri Lanka, including the tournament that year, which the team won. Additionally, he participated in a few World Cups for ODIs. In five ODIs, he also had the honor of serving as team captain. Thirimanne participated in three T20 World Cup campaigns, as well as Sri Lanka’s two most recent 50-over World Cup campaigns in 2015 and 2019.</p>
<p>“As a player, I have given my all, tried my best, respected the game, and done my duty honestly and ethically to my motherland,” Thirimanne said on Facebook.</p>
<p>It was a hard choice to make, but I won’t go into detail here about all the unanticipated factors that led me to make this choice, willingly or unwillingly.</p>
<p>“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the SLC members, my coaches, teammates, physios, trainers, and analysts for their support and encouragement,” he said.</p>
<p>He expressed his absolute honor at the chance to represent the nation on Instagram. Many thanks for the 13 years of wonderful memories and well wishes along the way. On the other side, I’ll see you.</p>
<p>In the second Test against India in Bengaluru in March of last year, Thirimanne played his last game for Sri Lanka and lost it cheaply for eight and zero.</p>
